Circle Acquires Nearly 1,000 IBM Blockchain Patents

Circle Internet Finance has acquired nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM, significantly expanding its intellectual property portfolio as the stablecoin issuer strengthens its position in digital asset infrastructure.

Circle acquires nearly 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM to strengthen its digital asset and stablecoin infrastructure.

The transaction is one of the largest blockchain patent acquisitions in recent years and gives Circle ownership of technology developed during IBM’s years of investment in enterprise blockchain solutions.

IBM was among the earliest technology companies to embrace blockchain for enterprise use cases, supporting initiatives such as its IBM Blockchain platform and the Hyperledger ecosystem. As the company shifted its strategic focus in recent years, much of its blockchain intellectual property became available for acquisition.

For Circle, the purchase extends beyond adding patents to its balance sheet. The company, best known as the issuer of USD Coin (USDC), is expanding its role as a provider of financial infrastructure connecting traditional finance with blockchain networks. A larger patent portfolio could help protect its products, support future innovation, and create opportunities to license technology to other companies operating in the digital asset sector.

The acquisition also comes as stablecoins receive increasing attention from regulators and financial institutions worldwide. As the industry moves toward greater institutional adoption, ownership of a substantial intellectual property portfolio may strengthen Circle’s position in discussions with partners, enterprise customers, and policymakers.

The deal reflects a broader shift across the blockchain industry, with established technology companies reducing their exposure to enterprise blockchain initiatives while crypto-native firms invest in strategic assets that can support long-term growth and competitive differentiation.

As competition intensifies across digital payments, tokenised finance, and blockchain infrastructure, intellectual property is becoming an increasingly important strategic asset alongside technology, regulatory compliance, and network scale.
