TD Bank Completes Live Tokenised Payment Using Real USD

TD Bank has completed a tokenised payment using real US dollar funds through Project Agorá, a major initiative led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and several central banks.

Project Agorá is exploring how tokenised commercial bank deposits can work alongside tokenised central bank money on a single programmable platform. The initiative brings together seven central banks and a group of private financial institutions to examine how emerging technology could reshape wholesale and cross-border payments.

TD’s transaction is notable because it involved actual USD funds rather than simulated money in a test environment. The move provides a more practical demonstration of how tokenised payment infrastructure could operate in real financial transactions.

For TD, the development represents another step in its digital assets strategy and strengthens the bank’s involvement in the development of next-generation payment infrastructure. As one of Canada’s largest banks and a significant US banking player, its participation also adds institutional weight to ongoing efforts around financial tokenisation.

Tokenised payment systems could eventually offer faster settlement, lower costs and greater programmability than some traditional payment rails. These potential benefits could be particularly relevant to cross-border transactions, where payments often depend on multiple intermediaries and legacy infrastructure.

TD has not disclosed the value of the transaction or detailed technical specifications. However, completing a real-value payment through a platform involving multiple central banks represents a notable step forward in testing how tokenised money could function within the global financial system.
