Modernizing Fund Accounting for Private Markets

Founded in 2020, LemonEdge is a London-based fintech company developing cloud-native fund accounting software purpose-built for the private markets industry. The company helps private equity firms, venture capital funds, fund administrators, family offices, real estate investment managers, and other alternative asset managers modernize complex accounting operations by replacing legacy software and spreadsheet-driven processes with a flexible, automated platform.

As private markets continue to grow in size and complexity, investment firms are increasingly challenged by outdated accounting systems that struggle to support sophisticated ownership structures, investor reporting, partnership allocations, and regulatory requirements. LemonEdge was created to solve these operational challenges through modern financial infrastructure designed specifically for alternative investments.

LemonEdge was co-founded in 2020 by Gareth Hewitt and Jamie Nascimento, two fintech professionals with extensive experience across fund accounting, financial technology, private capital markets, and enterprise software. Having spent years working with investment firms and legacy accounting platforms, the founders recognized the growing need for a cloud-native accounting platform capable of replacing fragmented operational workflows with a modern, configurable solution.

Today, David O’Malley serves as Chief Executive Officer, leading the company’s global expansion and commercial strategy. He works alongside Founder Gareth Hewitt, Chief Client Officer Katharine Briggs, Global Head of Finance Chris Seidita, and Global Head of Engineering Doran Smestad, who together oversee product innovation, client success, engineering, and international growth. While Jamie Nascimento co-founded LemonEdge and played a key role during the company’s early development, he is no longer listed as part of the current leadership team.

Since launching, LemonEdge has expanded from an early-stage fintech startup into one of the emerging technology providers focused exclusively on private markets infrastructure. According to the company, its platform supports organizations collectively managing more than $5 trillion in assets while processing over 60 million general ledger transactions. The Problem LemonEdge Solves

Private markets have evolved significantly over the last decade, yet many investment firms continue to rely on accounting platforms originally developed years ago.

Private equity managers, venture capital funds, family offices, and fund administrators often manage thousands of transactions across multiple entities, investors, currencies, and ownership structures. Many critical calculations still depend on spreadsheets and disconnected software, resulting in slow reporting, manual reconciliations, operational risk, and limited scalability.

As assets under management continue to increase, these fragmented workflows become increasingly difficult to manage efficiently.

LemonEdge was built to eliminate these inefficiencies by providing a centralized accounting platform capable of automating sophisticated financial operations while remaining flexible enough to support every firm’s unique investment structures and business processes.

Products and Platform

Rather than offering traditional accounting software, LemonEdge has developed a configurable accounting platform designed specifically for alternative asset managers.

Its flagship product is a next-generation fund accounting platform powered by a modern accounting engine capable of handling complex event-driven transactions, partnership accounting, investor allocations, and real-time reporting.

Unlike legacy systems that require significant customization, LemonEdge allows firms to configure accounting rules and operational workflows through a flexible low-code environment.

Core capabilities include

  • Fund Accounting
  • Partnership Accounting
  • Portfolio Accounting
  • Multi-Ledger General Ledger

One of LemonEdge’s strongest differentiators is its low-code architecture, enabling investment firms to configure highly specialized accounting workflows without lengthy software development projects. LemonEdge’s mission is to modernize private markets by replacing legacy accounting systems with intelligent, cloud-native financial infrastructure. Through automation, configurable workflows, and modern software architecture, the company aims to help investment firms reduce operational complexity, improve reporting accuracy, and scale more efficiently as the private markets industry continues to evolve.
