Crossmint Launches API for AI Agent Card Payments


Crossmint has launched a new API designed to enable secure card payments for AI agents, introducing infrastructure that allows eligible U.S. Visa cardholders to authorize agent-driven transactions without exposing sensitive payment credentials.

Developed in collaboration with Visa Intelligent Commerce and Basis Theory, the platform aims to address one of the biggest challenges facing agentic commerce: enabling autonomous transactions while maintaining security, compliance, and user control.

As AI agents increasingly move beyond information retrieval and begin executing real-world tasks, payment infrastructure providers are facing growing pressure to establish secure frameworks that allow agents to transact without creating new fraud and compliance risks.

Crossmintโ€™s solution uses tokenized payment credentials tied to existing Visa credit and debit cards. Users can authorize spending limits and transaction permissions while keeping underlying card details isolated from the AI agent environment.

The architecture is designed to prevent agents from accessing or storing raw card numbers, CVC codes, or other sensitive payment data.

Credential management is powered by Basis Theory, whose infrastructure is PCI Level 1 compliant and SOC 2 certified. By separating payment credentials from agent workflows, the system reduces security risks while simplifying compliance requirements for developers and businesses deploying AI-powered applications.

The launch comes as agentic commerce gains momentum across the payments industry. Financial institutions, payment networks, and fintech infrastructure providers are increasingly exploring how AI systems can participate in purchasing decisions while preserving customer oversight and regulatory safeguards.

Through Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect, users can generate tokenized credentials linked to their existing accounts, subject to issuer approval and predefined spending controls.

Crossmint said the infrastructure has already been integrated into its own AI payments platform, lobster.cash, and supports connections with several developer and agent ecosystems, including Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes, and Zo Computer.

The company believes standardized payment infrastructure will play a critical role in enabling broader adoption of agentic commerce by providing secure, network-compatible transaction capabilities for autonomous software agents.

As AI-powered purchasing workflows become more common, payment providers are increasingly focused on building the governance, authentication, and credential management frameworks required to support real-world financial transactions at scale.

The launch positions Crossmint within a growing segment of fintech infrastructure providers developing payment rails specifically designed for the emerging agent economy.
